Paul A. Volcker

Paul A. Volcker served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve System. He is former Chairman of Wolfensohn & Co., Inc., as well as Professor Emeritus of International Economic Policy at Princeton University . Educated at Princeton and Harvard and the London School of Economics, Mr. Volcker divided the earlier stages of his career between the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Chase Manhattan Bank, and the U.S. Treasury Department.

He was recently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Accounting Standards Committee and also chaired an intensive investigation of the UN’s Oil-for-Food Program. He is involved as consultant, or director of a number of organizations.

He is currently chairman of the newly formed Economic Recovery Advisory Board under President Barack Obama.

OBAMA MUST BROKER A NEW MIDEAST PEACE

As a new Middle East has begun to be shaped by citizens in individual countries, one issue appears conspicuously unaffected, at least on the surface: the Arab-Israeli dispute over Palestine.The US has more direct interests at stake in ensuring a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine than it does in the outcome in most other countries in the region, writes General Brent Scowcroft. Remaining silent on deadlocked negotiations over a two state solution, while encouraging greater democratisation in other countries, suggests a double standard that damages America’s image in the Middle East and the broader Muslim world.
